SUBJECT:         Dell Computers with XP SP 2 Installed

According to a recent correspondence from DELL Computers, DELL will begin to ship all new desktop computers with Microsoft XP SP 2, starting on or about April 1, 2005. As you know the XP SP 2 patch automatically activates the built in XP Firewall software as well as automatically activating a popup blocker. ITS has been in the process of "pushing down" a customized version of the XP SP 2 patch which disables the Firewall. This is being done because, the Firewall blocks SOPHOS and BigFix communication to/from ITS servers and the desktop.

If your site purchases any desktop computers with the XP SP 2 patch already installed, please make sure you "prep" them as follows BEFORE connecting them to your site network.

  #1. Set the XP personal firewall off.
  #2. Install the current SOPHOS client software on the desktop.
  #3. Install the current BigFix
